The One and Only

            Whenever a potential
            One and only
            Appeared on the horizon,
            Glowed in the dark,
            Walked across the stage,
Stepped up to the plate or
            Simply
            Wandered into view

I moved a few steps back
            The better to appraise

            To do due diligence, however,
            Properly
            Took so much time and
            Angling for a comprehensive look
            That she invariably withdrew
Before a verdict could be reached

            Compelling me, moreover,
            With another one and only
            To begin anew
