The Limits of Metaphor

            If it’s a truth
            That things are never
Only what they seem to be
            But always more, or less,
            Than they appear

I guess it would be fair
            To say that nothing
            Isn’t therefore something
            Of a ruse

            I think, however, you’ll agree
            A hammer – or a tooth –
            Is not much use
            For a caress
